Loving music is not just a hobby of ours.
Those good vibrations found within every song, beat, and melody are as crucial to our survival as the blood coursing through our veins. The sound of music goes deeper than humanity itself, with all forms of life singing in endless harmony, from the birds chirping in the sky to the leaves of the Earth whistling as the wind blows through. Even underneath the planet's surface, people are stirring up noise just as nature intended. In the unkempt, Christmas-light adorned basements of New Brunswick, the spirit of rock and roll is alive and well with homegrown concerts organized by the homeowners themselves. Apart from the incredible selection of local artists from punk bands to rappers, there is even more talent to be found within the extravagant concert halls of Mason Gross School of the Arts and the antiquated jazz clubs scattered downtown. The city of New Brunswick, and the entire state of New Jersey is brimming with musicians, and it is our responsibility here at The Basement to bring the scene to your attention. We are an online magazine comprised of Rutgers students from the University's first ever Music Journalism course, with a focus on the underground music scene of our hometown.
Our first volume of articles will include in-depth historical analysis, opinion pieces, personal reflections, concert coverage, and more.
